I tested this side by side with identical volumes of boiling water poured into two mugs: one handmade stoneware from Selamica and one standard department-store ceramic mug. After ten minutes, the factory mug’s outer surface had cooled significantly—I could hold it comfortably with bare fingers while the water inside was still warm but declining fast.
The handmade mug stayed hot to the touch for over fifteen minutes longer, meaning my coffee stayed hotter not because of insulation but because the entire wall acted as a heat reservoir that released warmth slowly back into the liquid rather than radiating it away quickly.
